Coast Guard Veteran Michael “Gunner” Pohl waves from the site of a new monument being installed by Bushman Crane at Pfiffner Pioneer Park on Oct. 30.

The monument will mark the passing of United States Veterans who also served on local law enforcement and fire/EMS agencies.

The $90,000 monument was purchased from Haertel Monuments with funds raised by the Guns N’ Hoses Committee, the group behind the annual cops-versus-firefighters softball game that raises money for Never Forgotten Honor Flight, Ageless Aviation Dream Flight, and other veteran causes.

Underneath the stone plaques, Pohl, using a thick, black marker, signed his name, and three others who helped bring the monument to fruition: Portage Co. Sheriff Mike Lukas, Stevens Point Police Chief Bob Kussow, and Traci Tauferner, a veteran of the U.S. Army who now works in the medical field.

“Now they’ll be there forever,” Pohl said on a chilly Monday morning.

The memorial is located at the southeast end of the park, behind the Chase Bank building. A dedication ceremony is planned for noon on Nov. 20.
